Lutheran Beliefs

Foundational to the Lutheran faith is our belief that Jesus Christ is the Word of God made flesh; that Jesus alone is the Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14:6). We believe that through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ all who believe are given the gift of eternal life (John 11:25). God’s Word is also revealed to us through the Scriptures (the Bible) and the sacraments (Baptism and Communion).

Baptism is the way we are received into the Church of Jesus Christ. Baptism is God’s gift to bring us into a faith relationship with him and his family - the Church. In baptism God forgives us our sins, draws us into the life, death and resurrection of Jesus and gives us the gift of the Holy Spirit. Whether we are baptized as infants, youth or adults through God’s grace we grow in faith.

Communion is a celebration of the meal that Jesus commanded us to share. As Lutherans we believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the elements of bread and wine. The Real Presence is the term that Lutherans use to describe this sacrament.

Lutheran worship is a very rich part of our tradition and heritage. Lutheran worship is liturgical, meaning it is a dialog of the gathered people. Although the individual components of each week’s liturgy may vary, Lutherans follow a four-fold format to our worship: a gathering of God’s people; a hearing of God’s Word; a celebration of communion; and a sending forth into the world to do mission and ministry.

We are a baptized people of God. We believe that as a community of faith we are called and empowered by God’s Spirit to go into the world to share the Good News of God’s love as revealed to us through Jesus.
